Ambri, an energy startup commercializing an innovative battery technology first developed at MIT, is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to lead the hardware development of Ambri’s cell management, battery management, and heater control systems.  AMBRI is seeking an individual to be a senior member of the AMBRI systems engineering team.  The position requires working collaboratively with other engineering disciplines to design novel solutions to complex utility scale energy storage challenges using Ambri’s Liquid Metal Cell technology.  The individual in this role will be called upon to solve complex design problems, provide technical leadership, work cross functionally, and communicate effectively with others within and outside the organization.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Work within the Systems Engineering team to develop Ambri’s liquid metal battery control systems to monitor and manage cells for SOC and SOH, monitor and control system temperature, monitor and control the DC Bus
  • Be responsible for developing circuit designs, as well as the detailed board design/layout of battery management systems in grid applications
  • Use ‘best practices’ in board design, including designing the board for robustness, scalability, incorporate ‘future proofing’ where appropriate (i.e., in case current/power requirements increase in the future), and ensure that selected components have minimum supply chain risk and/or drop-in alternative components when possible
  • Lead design reviews on circuit and board designs
  • Perform board layout and/or work with other team members / consultants to complete board layout
  • Perform worst case analysis, sensitivity analysis, obsolescence analysis on circuit designs
  • Design for EMI/RFI and operation in substation environments
  • Work with contract manufacturing to fabricate the boards and populate the assemblies
  • Test/debug/evaluate circuit and board designs and assemblies
  • Support system level review and analysis for DFMEA or other cross functional needs as required
  • Support manufacturing test engineering associated with PCBAs
  • Work with other systems engineers to evaluate and propose solutions that align with Ambri’s overall goals and mission
  • Develop detailed Work Breakdown Schedules for all phases of the project
  • Develop test specifications product verification
  • Interface with and assist test engineering and manufacturing engineering to verify compliance of product to mandated safety and conformance, customer, and product requirements
  • Mentor junior electrical engineers to guide their development
  • Operate independently, with minimal management oversight

Requirements: 

  • Must have at least a BSEE degree and 5 years’ experience in power engineering or related field
  • Experience in cell/battery management hardware design highly desired
  • Demonstrated excellent problem-solving skills
  • Must have excellent English written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability of working well within a team and independently to achieve results
  • Familiarity with interfaces such as I2C, SPI, PCIe, UBS, CANbus, and MODBUS
  • Proven track record with:
    • OrCAD Schematic Capture Tool
    • Strong pc-board debug skills
    • Strong knowledge of basic test equipment, including scopes, power supplies, electronic loads, power analyzers
    • Strong knowledge of components used in cell and battery management designs
  • Must have permanent legal authorization to work in the U.S. without employer sponsorship
