Ambri, an energy startup commercializing an innovative battery technology first developed at MIT, is seeking a Safety and Compliance Engineer that will provide expertise concerning product and environmental safety and risk mitigation in support of Ambri’s DC system products and Innovation Hub test infrastructure.


Position Overview

Ambri is seeking an individual to be a key member of the Ambri System Engineering team.  The position requires working collaboratively with other engineering and development disciplines to design and support novel solutions to complex utility scale energy storage challenges using Ambri’s LiquidTM Metal Battery technology. As a member of the Systems Engineering team the successful candidate will provide technical guidance on design, manufacturing, testing, servicing, and monitoring of products. This role focuses on the integration of product safety risk assessments and principles throughout the entire design process. The impact of the role is cross-functional and collaborates with different departments to balance product safety, EHS, regulatory and compliance, and customer requirements.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in a cross-functional R&D Engineering team working to attain necessary global certifications.
  • Work with 3rd party NRTL test labs in arrangements, preparing product documents and support in performing the testing; compile and maintain internal reports and lab reports.
  • Maintain knowledge of the most current EMC, electrical & mechanical safety, and functional safety & compliance standards.
  • Understand, promote, represent, and translate product requirements pertaining to US and International EMC / EMI and Radio standards (e.g., FCC Part B, IEC 61000, EMC Directive 2014/30/EU) and related test equipment.
  • Understand, promote, represent, and translate product requirements pertaining to US and International environmental safety standards (e.g., RoHS, REACH, Batteries/WEEE, etc.).
  • Analyze failure modes, determine the effect of the failure, and identify mitigations and diagnostics.
  • Provide risk assessment to UL, IEC and other standards and the validation of safety functions based on structural and statistical methods.
  • Maintain knowledge of the most current fire safety standards such as NFPA 855 IFC,

NFPA 1 etc.

  • Review product designs for adherence to good safety & compliance practices regarding PCB, wiring, grounding, enclosures, mechanical assemblies, etc.
  • Develop test methods and protocols for testing, then execute product testing.
  • Support test equipment used in-house for evaluations; perform pre-compliance testing in-house and in external test labs if required.
  • Present, discuss, and review safety and compliance specifications in collaborative, cross-functional team environment.
  • Work to achieve balance between the perfect technical solution, safety & compliance standards, and managing business risk.
  • Keep abreast of changes and developments in relevant global testing standards and requirements.
  • Product compliance areas include, but may not be limited to: Ordinary Locations, Hazardous Locations (ATEX / IECEx), EMC, safety, and Environmental parameters.
  • Research safety related information on industry-specific equipment and processes.
  • Develop in-depth knowledge of a Battery Energy Storage Systems and other relevant technical disciplines. Uses prior experience and acquired technical expertise to execute product safety strategy.

  

Requirements:

  • 2-5 years working in a cross-functional R&D Engineering environment delivering electromechanical systems through development and into manufacturing.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Work in a collaborative team environment with the willingness to assist mid and senior level engineering and project management staff.
  • MS Office Proficiency.
  • Recognize and address cross functional implications of your work.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Knowledge of EMC testing methodologies and equipment.
  • Familiarity with 3rd party Certification processes and bodies.

 

Education Level:

 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or equivalent.
