R&D Engineer II

Ambri, an energy startup commercializing an innovative battery technology first developed at MIT, is seeking an R&D Engineer II to explore and assist development of cell components for next-generation lower-cost and/or higher performing versions of Ambri’s Liquid Metal™ battery cell products.

Position Overview

Ambri is seeking an individual contributor to join Ambri’s newly formed Applied Research team. The position requires working collaboratively with our Seals and Cell Development teams to improve Ambri’s battery components to further reduce cost and/or achieve greater performance for next generation cell products. This role requires someone who has broad laboratory experience, especially in ceramic materials and processing methods, a working knowledge of electrochemical systems, with a preference towards someone experienced with furnace operation, inert atmosphere sample handling, and/or powder processing.  Experience with ceramic machining methods, metallurgy and dissimilar material joining is highly desirable.

The work will involve a combination of in-house hands-on experiments, testing, and development, with dedicated equipment such as gloveboxes, furnaces, powder handling systems and battery testers, including collaboration with external research partners and/or vendors.  

This role requires someone that can quickly understand high level objectives, independently formulate a systematic approach to identifying and exploring options worth testing, excels at hands-on testing and R&D, provides clear communication to colleagues and research partners, has a collaborative working style while also being comfortable with engaging in critical discussions to ensure we are making as much progress as possible.


  • Quickly establish an understanding of Ambri battery components and development objectives for next generation batteries that operate near 500C
  • Provide hands-on laboratory support for multiple R&D projects focused on next generation cell chemistry, ceramic-based materials & processing methods, joining methods and coatings
  • Collaboratively work with experienced team members to perform high temperature experiments on molten salts and liquid metals inside gloveboxes with inert atmospheres
  • Learn basic ceramic machining methods and be responsible for performing ceramic machining periodically/as required, to support rapid in-house turnaround of R&D samples
  • Create and execute experimental test plans for new materials and coatings to evaluate their performance relative to our targets/requirements, and work with other team members to confirm that the results provide clear evidence of improved performance or reduced cost
  • Record, track, summarize, and effectively communicate experimental results with other team members
  • Maintain laboratory equipment



  • The preferred candidate will have an MS degree in Materials Science/Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field, with a focus on high temperature materials, coatings, and fabrication methods, preferably with experience in systems resistant to oxidation and corrosive environments.  Candidates having a BS degree with associated industrial experience will also be considered.  Hands-on experience with furnaces and high temperature experiments is highly desired.
  • Demonstrated in-depth scientific and practical engineering understanding of ceramic materials and metal-to-ceramic joining methods
  • Working knowledge of powder processing and densification methods
  • An ability to work independently to support project objectives and timelines
  • Experience in metallurgy and corrosion
  • Demonstrated examples of practical problem-solving skills
  • Must have excellent English written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability of working well within a team and independently to achieve results
